A 54-year-old Crystal River man was killed Tuesday night after he was involved in a crash while riding his motorcycle.
The collision took place at 10:15 p.m. on North Citrus Avenue near the intersection of West Hawthorne Street in Crystal River.
The man was riding his 2001 Harley-Davidson north on North Citrus Avenue when a 2004 Ford Explorer moving in the same direction decelerated to make a left turn onto West Hawthorne Street.
Investigators claim the motorcyclist entered the southbound lane of North Citrus Avenue to pass the Ford Explorer, but the driver of the SUV failed to see him and executed a left turn right into the biker’s path.
The man’s motorcycle smashed into the left side of the SUV, and the man was thrown from his bike.
The biker died from his injuries at the scene of the crash.
Motorcycle riders enjoy their freedom of the open road, but with that freedom comes an increased exposure to certain dangers. In fact, when it comes to traffic accidents, motorcyclists are four times more likely than other motorists to be seriously injured or killed in a traffic related accident. Bikers are placed at a bigger risk for severe injuries or fatalities due to the lack of protection that motorcycles offer to riders when travelling. For the most part, there is seldom any protection between the rider and the road.
Motorcycle accidents result in more injuries to occupants than passenger vehicle accidents. The motorcycle itself provides no head injury protection to motorcycle riders or their passengers. Only helmets can protect a biker’s head from sustaining an injury. Motorcycle accidents often result in rider ejection. When a motorcycle comes to a sudden stop or collides with an object in its path, it is likely that the rider will be thrown from the bike and will forcibly strike the ground and any other obstructions in the area.
