Car accidents can be extremely serious, often resulting in severe injuries and even death. When a driver causes a collision with another vehicle or pedestrian, that person is required to stop and check on the condition of anyone involved so that appropriate action can be taken. When a motorist hits someone and fails to stop, this is considered a hit-and-run. Fleeing the scene of an accident is a crime and can be charged as a felony.
Unfortunately, hit-and-run accidents are quite common. In fact, an alarming 700,000 hit-and-run collisions are reported every year in the U.S. Most people that leave the scene of the accident do so because they have something to hide. Drivers may hit-and-run for various reasons, including:
• Alcohol – Drunk driving is one of the top reasons motorists flee the scene of an
accident.
• Lack of Car Insurance or a Valid Driver’s License – Uninsured or underinsured motorists may be inclined to leave the scene of an accident because they are afraid of potential legal ramifications.
• Fault – When drivers know that their reckless actions, such as speeding, tailgating or distracted driving caused a traffic crash, they are more likely to drive away from the scene.
Whatever the reason, fleeing the scene of an accident is illegal.
