Man Killed During School Bus “Figure 8” Race at Citrus County Speedway

Sports-related head injuries

Inverness, Florida – A 62-year-old Ocala driver was killed Saturday night while participating in a sanctioned school bus race at Citrus County Speedway.

While competing in the special “figure 8” race, the man’s green bus overturned, landed on its roof and was struck by a black bus.

According to reports, no one else suffered any injuries.

According to the track announcer, around 10 p.m., two buses collided causing the green bus to flip.

School bus figure 8 racing is often carried out as a special event at many short tracks around the country. This type of racing can be dangerous because vehicles cross at an unregulated intersection in the middle of the course.

Citrus County Speedway is a three-eighths mile paved oval located two miles south of Inverness at the Citrus County Fairgrounds.

This is not the first accident at a racetrack in west central Florida this year. In May, a 12-year-old boy from Arcadia suffered fatal injuries in a Kids Club race at Auburndale Speedway in Polk County.

After a fatal accident, family members of those killed may be able to pursue a wrongful death claim against any responsible parties. While the damages received in a wrongful death claim cannot ease the pain associated with losing a loved one, it can help secure the family’s financial future and wellbeing.

Wrongful death lawsuits may be brought by the surviving family members of a person who dies as the result of another person’s recklessness or negligence. This may include specific relatives and family members, such as:

  • A Spouse
  • Children of the Victim
  • Parents of the Victim

Under certain circumstances a grandparent or another extended family member may be able to file suit. Every case is unique so it is best to discuss the matter with a wrongful death lawyer that can determine your rights and answer any questions you may have regarding a wrongful death suit.

The Citrus County Injury Lawyers at Whittel & Melton handle wrongful death claims in Inverness, Crystal River, Beverly Hills, Lecanto, Homosassa, Dunnellon, Hernando, Sugarmill Woods, Citrus Springs and Floral City. We understand the importance of financial recovery for surviving family members and will fight to make sure you receive full and fair compensation for your losses. Please remember that in the state of Florida, the Statute of Limitations for wrongful death is two years from the date of a loved one’s death.

If you have lost a family member because of someone else’s wrongful conduct in Citrus County, contact the Inverness Injury & Wrongful Death Lawyers at Whittel & Melton online or call 352-726-0078.
